"Listening Again to the Call and Response: Evolutions of Capoeira"
For this project, I have been collaborating with Dr. J.B. Shilcutt (Dance Faculty) to integrate storytelling and movement principles as we create documentary materials about the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira. This began as a response to a gap in a qualitative research study that identified Capoeira teachers' interests in having more material that could help people know the ins and outs of Capoeira.
To support this creative research, we invited students to join as co-collaborators. Some were able to join us for a study abroad trip to Brazil to design interview questions and capture footage; others have joined as collaborators in the post production process.
This project is currently ongoing, and some areas of focus include inclusive practices within the form, instruments and musicality, and capoeira in the local context.
